Here’s the weekend wrap-up
Free Condoms at the Olympics: Did anyone catch this story over the weekend? Durex is said to be donated 130,000 free rubbers to athletes at the upcoming games. As I recall a similar prophylactic hand-out program came under serious fire when the games were in Salt Lake City in 2002. Hopefully there won’t be a problem this time. Perhaps having the games in a less sexually repressed place that SLC will help. After all, it’s not exactly news that athletes do have sex. Yes folks, being a stud on the field of play and having your body in peak physical condition can actually lead to one getting laid from time to time. (And for those of you snickering with me, yes Greece is the perfect place to pass out condoms. You can insert your favorite Greek/Anal Sex joke here.)
Maddux gets 300: I have been a huge Greg Maddux fans ever since he was a Cub the first time so I am really happy to see him get win number 300. This guy has been the most consistent pitcher I’ve ever seen and he’s a class guy all the way. It’s just too bad he did it on the road and didn’t get the kind of ovation that he really deserved.
Payton to Boston Speaking of class acts, let’s talk about someone who isn’t. As part of the big Gary Payton for Marcus Banks, Chris Mihm and Chucky Adkins deal the Celtics picked up a conditional draft pick which is great, but they also had to help the Lakers unload Rick Fox and that’s bad. Fox was one of many Celtic draft busts from the early 90’s and after under-achieving for a few years he left for LA to play for the Lakers and try his hand at acting. On his way out the door, the ungrateful prick bad-mouthed the franchise that drafted him, seemingly ignoring the fact that part of the decline of the Celts was because of bad picks like Fox. He was a glorified cheerleader for three title runs, but was best at flopping, cherry picking and doing piss-poor commercials during his stay in SoCal. Now that his body has totally broken down and he’s been dumped by his wife, Celtic fans can only hope that he takes the easy way out and just retires. If not, the team may buy him out rather than carry his worthless ass for a season. What comes around goes around Rick and I can only hope that he enjoys being an actor because he sure as hell was never much of a basketball player.
Team USA No excuses guys. If you play like this in Athens, then you won’t come home with the gold and you won’t deserve it. Best players or not, the NBA guys are still bigger, faster and more athletic. Are they a better team? Not at this point. Remember guys, an eye-popping dunk is still only wroth two points.
