Just six months after finally ditching the VHS review format, here come the HD-DVD reviews. At this point our choices are limited to just a few titles and everything is a re-issue. Since the material on the discs is going to be the same for a while, I’m going to review these early HD titles with an eye on comparing the new format (picture and sound quality) to what was already offered on DVD. It’s a new and exciting format for me and any feedback is always welcome.

Since Island Fever 3 is a 2-Disc Combo (With both HD-DVD and DVD copies of the movie included) I am going to run the two at the same time for easy comparison. Both are being shown on a 55″ Mitsubishi television. I have them pretty well synched up and can switch back and forth quite easily.

It doesn’t take long to see the difference in picture quality. The title sequence alone shows us just how stunning this is going to be. Since the Island Fever movies are all about eye candy and quality music, the improved picture and sound quality set the stage perfectly.

Jesse and Devon open the movie with a tease sequence that features them posing naked with scarves blowing in the mind. The contrast on the HD-DVD is much better and makes the beautiful outdoor setting all the more stunning. When they actually start kissing, the improved clarity is almost frightening. You can actually see the glistening of their tongues as the two blondes explore one another with reckless abandon. You can almost count the grains of sand on Devon’s body as she lies on the beach with Jesse between her legs.

One of the things we are watching closely is how the HD clarity affects things like skin tones and how much it shows off any “flaws” in the performers. Watching Devon do her best to swallow Evan Stone’s big cock we get a good idea of how this problem may arise in some productions. The make up and lighting are excellent in this production, but companies are going to have to be careful. Clarity like this leaves little room for error.

There is a scene between Barrett Blade and Tera Patrick that is quite grainy on my DVD version, but the HD-DVD clears up virtually all of this. Take a look at the detail in the rub they are using. It’s quite remarkable. I wonder if the picture difference will be as pronounced in a movie where all the action is not in slow motion.

For a real treat, check out the Jesse Jane solo/tease scene in the water. The colors are so much more vivid on the HD and the long slow motion shots of the waves really bring the difference in picture to light. The grain of sand test also applies when Eric Masterson joins Jesse for some standing fun in knee-deep water. This was a hot scene to begin with and the improved picture only makes Jesse more stunning to watch.

Jesse comes back for a scene with Evan under a waterfall. To call it beautiful or fawn over the picture quality would simply be redundant at this point. It’s gorgeous in every sense of the word. The sound is also quite clear. I’m not hearing a lot of sound difference to be honest, but I’m running this on a receiver that is six year old so there might be some better equipment out there to get the most out of the audio quality.

The elements at play in this movie really help with a picture quality test. The grains of sand, the water, the lush plant life, everything just seems to add to the visual buffet offered to us. In another movie, the differences might not be so pronounced, but they certainly are here.

Extras:

There is a running audio commentary on the HD-DVD, but the other bonus material is not duplicated. (BTS, trailers, galleries) I don’t know if the HD-DVDs will have different bonus material in the future. If you really want to see trailers and a photo gallery, you can pop in the DVD version of the movie.

It would be easy to say that this is the best HD-DVD I have ever seen because it’ the first HD-DVD I have ever seen. I think this is the perfect type of project for the new format. “Island Fever 3” is a beautiful movie featuring gorgeous women in exotic locations. The new format offers picture quality that is amazing, adding to the viewing experience in a way that is just perfect. HD has made a lush, beautiful piece of adult eye candy and made it measurably better. The colors are more vivid, the details sharper and if possible, Jesse Jane is even hotter.
