Porn retailers have often struggled to find the perfect electronic blend of virtual marketplace, peepshow and star exchange. But not every porn aficionado is the college frat boy type, stumbling blindly through whatever free download they can squeeze out of their outdated Napster platforms. Not to say EdgeXD is inaccessible to the blue-collar variety of porn purveyors. It does, after all, sport the essentials of a good porn website; plenty of pictures, videos and even toys (oddly, none of the ones I’ve reviewed during my heyday; it just goes to show you that even Stoya’s career had more of an impact than mine).
Yet the polished execution of EdgeXD is what propels it into the higher category. Much like Eddie Izzard in heels, EdgeXD.com offers a much more “executive” delivery of porn. The slick design is only dazzled by the customization features, allowing users to hoard their favorite articles, videos and pictures under the “My Stash” option. As an added bonus, users can create specialized channels showcasing their selections and swapping with others—I can’t wait for some sleazy savant to pick up on my “Sorority Sluts” channel.
Still, there’s room for some improvement here. It would be beneficial for EdgeXD to develop a stronger system to allow for recommendations of additional channels and games based on the uploaded content. This should be a relatively easy task, given the sheer volume of uploaded content EdgeXD has in ready supply for the large demand. Tragically, it has yet to suggest “All Aurora Snow, All the Time,” which is what made me first think it’s a flaw that should be addressed pretty soon.
Continuing on, EdgeXD‘s smart design branches out with the “Lounge” option, an interactive social gathering featuring breathing, moving avatars against the backdrop of a swanky nightclub with large televisions broadcasting clips of porn and football games. Each avatar represents a different portal, including new additions of music, traveling, and video games (cleverly described as, “for those times you prefer your Xbox to your wife’s box”) for those times a porn fan wants to be surrounded, but not completely absorbed with, an x-rated website.
Because I’m a geeky gamer to boot, I’m pleased to see games receiving such a strong promotion in a rather unconventional medium. The “Arcade” features nine basic platform-style games like Tic Tac Toe, Sudoku and Solitaire, but with a sexy twist. The end result is sparring off with virtual babes in the buff for the games your grandmother used to beg you to play. The interface is obviously still working a few kinks out (it took several clicks to have my letter show up on Tic Tac Toe board—along those same lines, can we please get a model with better boobs?) but it’s an impressive effort for the initiate launch.
The last element of the website is undoubtedly my favorite. It’s the “Black Market,” a virtual exchange for the hottest schwag in town. Correctly guessing that their target demographic includes technophiles, EdgeXD wisely offers the latest gadgets and gizmos in and out of the porn arena (side note: any long-time readers are invited to send me the “I Rub My Duckie” to bring some yuletide cheer coast-side). Best of all, they offer devices unlikely to be found elsewhere, and that are one-of-a-kind in their novelty—USB hubs based on “Star Wars” characters? Yes, please!
Without a doubt, EdgeXD lives up to its’ moniker by being poised on the brink of real change. In looking at the glossy design, it becomes clear that EdgeXD is the new hybrid of porn and technology, straddling the line of contemporary x-rated execution and hip social networking arena. If Facebook, “Maxim” and the Playboy Channel joined forces, they’d ultimately come up with EdgeXD to deliver the most advanced porn networking site on the Internet.
