There seems to be a common theme running through the mail-bag this week. File this one in the “Rog, what do you think of” folder.
Ercin34 Writes: “Rog, what do you think of the new Star Wars Flick?”
Rog Replies:
I think it’s a great flick, totally entertaining and easily the best of the new trilogy by a long-shot. There were weaknesses of course, but they are the usual things we bag on Lucas about. (Lame dialog, etc.) It would be difficult for any move to measure up to the original “Star Wars” for me because it was the first movie I fell in love with. I loved the way it tied up the loose ends and the music was stunning as always. Since I get to the theatre about once every two months these days I am pretty tough of flicks that aren’t entertaining and this one was a great two hours.
Craig Writes: Hey Rog. Great site. I was wondering what you thought about this whole filibuster thing?”
Rog Replies: Man this could take all day. (Or I could just copy and paste a bunch of whiny partisan web links and pass that off as thoughtful commentary.) The whole thing is an exercise in petty partisanship. I do not want to see the filibuster rules changed, period. Why? Because I don’t like the idea of changing the rules in the middle of the game. I said this during the 2000 election mess. If there is a problem with something, address it when you aren’t in the middle of the fight. To do otherwise is wrong. Having said that, I am just as disgusted by the unprecedented obstructionism we’ve seen on the judicial nominees. Look guys, this is how the thing works. Let the judges be voted upon. Painting ALL of them as stupid, inbred, Nazi war criminals who are coming for our rights and our children is ignorant, petty, disingenuous and just plain bitchy. If they get in, they get in. If they are horrible judges then hold the up-voting Senators responsible next election cycle. That is how it works. Before you go rushing to your keyboards to rip me a new one remember what I said about changing the rules of the game while it is in play. The way this is handled will last long after George Bush is out of office. It will come into play with Democrats in charge, with Republicans as a minority party and every other combination you can dream up. Please try to see beyond this moment and the myopic personal hatred you have.
So there you go. I hate the idea of changing the rules, but I also have had enough of the damn whining. As Don Henley wisely said “Get over it.”
Rog, what is your take on the Jason Giambi/Yankees thing?
Rog Replies: For some reason I feel kind of bad for Giambi. I know that he juiced, but he seems like a good guy who is at least trying to come clean. None of them can be totally honest about it, but Jason has done more to fess up than anyone else. (Don’t get me started on Jose.) If his contract can be voided for roids, then I can understand where the Yankees are coming from of course. It’s a lot of money and he hasn’t come through like they thought he would. On the one hand you can’t blame the Yankees for wanting to find a way out of a contract like that. After all, he did violate steroid policy. On the other hand, it would be nice to see a team sticking by a guy who has had more guts than most. When he comes to Anaheim later this season I’ll boo Giambi because he’s a Yankee, not because he used steroids.
CoRoth00 Writes: Hello Roger, I noticed that you have a My Space account. Nice pictures. I have noticed also that it is very popular with porn people to have a My Space account. What I am wondering is why you have so few My Space friends and why so many people have unkind things to say to or about you on your My Space account. You should put them in their place or delete them if they can’t show you more respect. How are these people to say that your days are numbered? Who the hell are these idiots?
Rog Replies: Thanks….I think. I do have a My Space account, that is true. It is also true that a number of porn people have accounts. As for the comments left for me and the “unkind” nature of them, I am a bit confused. I only see two comments that could be seen as negative at all. One is from my old friend Monstar and that is just how he is. I’m pretty sure he’s kidding and even if he isn’t, so what? Some sites have to talk a lot about how great they are. More power to him. The other comment by CJones shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I doubt if he meant any disrespect by it. I met him in Vegas and he’s a very cool guy. I’m sure he feels that he’s going to take over, but frankly that just means that he thinks he chasing me. I guess I could get all blustery about comments like this, but I will let other talk about how great they are. I’ll just keep doing what I do and enjoy being the one people feel they need to pass to get wherever it is they think they’re going.
