THE PIPELINE: NOVEMBER 2002
We’ve made it through another October and that means that award season is just around the corner. This is when critics all over the world of porn are scrambling through their notes, piles of screeners and helpful suggestions from PR people to pick the very best from the year in smut. I’ve been gathering the names of performers, directors and movies that will vie for the coveted Rog Reviews Awards, but you’re going to have to wait for those announcements. For now, everyone will have to settle for news and happenings from around the X Rated World.
I led off last month’s column by talking about the start of the baseball playoffs. It took nearly the entire month to whittle the field of eight down to a single championship team. I was lucky enough to have tickets for the entire playoff run for the Anaheim Angels. Considered huge underdogs to the mighty Yankees, the Angels advanced to face the Twins in the American League Championship Series. The Twins were no match either and that set up an all-California World Series between the Angels and the Giants. Last month I asked for another seven game thriller and that is exactly what we got. Trailing 3 games to 2, the Angels put together an amazing weekend to win the series in 7. Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe just how amazing the series was. Congratulations to the Angels for a fantastic season and a great run in the playoffs.
It is a generally accepted rule in porn that many women get ahead by blowjob company owners, directors, editors and just about anyone in the office in order to get ahead. Blonde bombshell Shyla Stylez (Formerly known simply as Shyla) has decided that there is no point in messing with the underlings. Instead she went right to the top and married the chairman of Jill Kelly Productions, Bob Friedland on October 23rd. “We just couldn’t wait any longer,” Friedland told AVN.com in an exclusive interview. “I feel I’m very lucky to have her and she brings nothing but joy and happiness to my life.” A honeymoon has been scheduled during the company’s Thanksgiving vacation next month. Shyla, who recently signed a contract with JKP, shot her first movie for the company, “Killer Sex” just last week.
Porn’s biggest stud, Lexington Steele has signed a new production deal with Rosebud Productions. The multi-award winning performer/director was inked to a two movie deal. He will produce, direct and star in “Heavy Metal 3 & 4.” Rosebud is banking on Steele’s presence both behind and in front of the camera to help continue the line’s success. “Heavy Metal” grabbed a 2002 AVN Award as Best Anal Feature. “We’re ecstatic to have Lex back to continue his signature series, Heavy Metal. We’ve had incredible success with the first two releases in the series and have had voluminous requests to continue it”, exclaimed Rosebud’s Joey Wilson. Production on Heavy Metal 3 will begin immediately, with a release date to coincide with the AEE show in January. No word as of yet what this deal may mean for Lex’s relationship with Anabolic/Diabolic, but sources tell me that nothing has changed between the male superstar and the company he most often directs for.
Sin City had an interesting month with their new contract girl Karina Kean. Their first press release announced that the company had signed the younger sister of hot star Katja Kean. Just days later, Sin City released a second press release announcing that they had been duped by Karina’s agent. It was discovered that is not the younger sibling of the former Sin City girl. Sin City’s Director of Marketing, Scott Stein responded to the faux pas, “This situation is obviously something that we’re taking very seriously. The documents presented to Sin City, in reference to Karina’s identity appeared to be legitimate. I’d personally like to thank everyone for their e-mails and telephone calls alerting me of the deception. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens quite often – even the ages of professional baseball players have been falsified. We are debating legal action against the person who apparently falsified the documents; however, proving that a specific person is accountable may be difficult to prove.” As for Karina? “We are one thousand percent convinced that Karina had no knowledge of the misinformation. She, as well as, Sin City – were victims. She was under the impression that her name was simply being changed. We are still committed to having her serve as a representative of Sin City and are convinced that she will be a huge star,” explained Stein. Apparently Karina has something even more interesting than a porn bloodline, a link to a celebrity athlete. Stein concluded, “The irony of everything that just happened is – that Karina’s true story is even more sensational. The fact that she has a legitimate connection to the National Football League will prove to be more interesting than being a younger sibling to a former adult star. We will be holding a Press Conference shortly to offer more details on this episode, as well as, Karina’s real NFL story.”
Reality TV fans will be happy to know that Playboy has nabbed two recent “Big Brother 3” stars for their January issue. PornoDave from www.JizzBiz.TV reports that busty blonde Tonya and outwardly slutty Chiara will bare it all for the mag. Viewers of the show have been drooling over Tonya ever since she showed her happy parts in a whipped cream bikini. (Hard working fans were able to find some nice nude vidcaps of her hooters pre-cream.) I’m sure that this pair will launch several thousand hard ons, and that later on both women will go on talk shows to discuss why they should not be seen as bimbos.
There is a new production company on the horizon. DVSX has been formed by director Alex Ladd and their first two releases have hit the shelves. Teaming with first time directors Constance Le (Teen Sensations) and Bryan Xin (Truly Nice Tits) Ladd has put together a very solid team. Keep an eye out for this new company. They will be coming on strong with a good combination of technical skills, hot babes and the all-important simultaneous DVD/VHS release dates.
I want to take a few moments now to recognize the announced retirement of Martin Brimmer. Some of you may not know the name, but if you’ve watched porn over the last decade or read any reviews, then you definitely know his work. Citing health concerns (He suffers from an extreme form of the skin disorder psoriasis.) the award winning screen writer officially announced his retirement this month. Starting in 1992, with the screenplay for “Dirty Books” starring Ashlyn Gere, Brimmer embarked on a career that saw him pen dozens of adult features for directors like John Leslie, Nic Cramer and most notably Jonathan Morgan. With hits like “Indigo Delta”, “Pornogothic”, “Knockout” and “Tell Me What You Want” as well as AVN-award winning comedies “Double Feature” and “M:Caught in the Act”, the writer/director tandem enjoyed unparalleled success. Their last effort, “Hercules”, was recently released by Wicked Pictures. So far, their collaborations have netted a whopping 57 award nominations and 20 wins. During a three year span between 1999 and 2001, Brimmer heard his name called at the AVN Awards for Best Screenplay (Film) for the thriller “Looker” in 2000 for Best Screenplay (Video) for “Double Feature” and in 2001 for Best Sex Comedy for “M:Caught in the Act.”
Brimmer had this to say in a statement to AVN “I’ve met and worked with a lot of wonderful people in this business, but after writing over two hundred features over the years there comes a time for the realization that adult film is indeed a limited genre, and I think I’ve composed every possible scenario I can think of without engaging the pizza guy and the pool cleaner.” As for what comes next, Brimmer will be returning to mainstream where he has had much success. Under his real name, Rodger Jacobs, Brimmer has written and produced several feature documentaries (“Guns of the Civil War”, “Women:First and Foremost”, “World War II: From Breadlines to Boom Times”) and has worked as a freelance journalist for scores of publications, including Eye Magazine and E Commerce Business News.
On a personal note, I would like to say that Martin Brimmer will be sorely missed. His professional accomplishments speak for themselves, but they don’t speak to the kind of man he is. Martin/Rodger is one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet. We have worked together on a few projects, including the ill-fated XXXGen magazine where he edited my work into something I could be proud of. Most recently he was helping shape my rather unorthodox style into something that Adam Film World could use. He has been a huge help to me with script writing, a mentor and above all a great friend. I am proud to say that my association with Rodger Jacobs will continue even as Martin Brimmer hangs up his spurs. I thank you my friend and wish you all the best.
