Blog: Weekend Tweets Expanded
Last week’s blog about why I have given up talking politics with certain people (Read More Here) was rather well received. (I count negative email with good discussion as well received.) So I figured I would try it again.
I was going to follow up on that discussion last week and expand on a Twitter back and forth about Keith Olbermann and Michael Moore ranting on Current TV. Really, two millionaires with massive media influence and their own camera crews, whining that the media isn’t covering an anti-profit protest enough? Another story for another time.
Instead I want to address a tweet I sent and the reply to it.
So it’s Sunday afternoon and I’m just finishing up lunch with Mrs. Rog, watching a little TV before it’s time to take the family out for a day of baseball and happiness. Leave it to Twitter, porn drama and stupidity to shatter that peaceful day.
My Twitter stream was filled with the usual stuff, lots of football updates and the usual fun. Along came this from Monica Foster.
MonicaFosterIf I’d stuck with my brothers and had never messed around with loser white guys, I would have avoided a lot of trouble. Lesson learned.
Ignoring the obvious, I decided to reply with this:
RogerTPipe @
@MonicaFoster You need to find the right guy no matter what his race.
Some of you are already shaking your heads. In recent weeks Monica has said some outrageous stuff and stirred the pot plenty. I haven’t said a word. I’ve listened and even sent some people her way for some interesting takes on things. I’ve seen her call people in porn “pedophiles” and rant about the evils of sex (even in fantasy) with children (Good for her.) and then openly praise Michael Jackson without jumping on the obvious hypocrisy. I also didn’t say a word about her tweet itself other than to say that she should find a good guy regardless of race. Apparently it was a big mistake to actually express kindness and respect to someone intent on spewing venom. Her reply was a little surprising.
MonicaFoster@ @RogerTPipe go to hell you piece of porn trash.
Wow. Not the worst thing anyone has ever called me to be sure, but one of most unprovoked attacks to be sure. It’s hard to tell exactly what she found so offensive in my message. I’ve never said anything unkind to or about Monica in a review or otherwise. I realize that I’m white and she’s on a string of racist rants lately so maybe that’s it. How dare I say that one should seek the good within people instead of being stuck on race. It was clearly a racist message I was sending….wait a second. No it wasn’t. It was the direct opposite of that. My message could only be offensive to someone thinks that virtue and goodness comes from race rather than character. I think there is a word for that, but it escapes me at the moment. (Cough, RACIST…cough.)
Now it’s far more likely that Monica’s response has to do with the fact that I’m a journalist in and around the porn industry. That’s a fair position to take. Porn has plenty of detractors. From the religious right to the feminist left, people of all races and genders have issue with XXX industry and sometimes that hatred extends to all people in the industry. Of course, from a spiritual perspective, it flies directly in the face of the “love the sinner not the sin” way of thinking that is a cornerstone of most religions. It would seem strange for Monica to take a position that all porn people are “trash” given the fact that she is still active in reporting on, discussing and vlogging about porn. I wonder, was she “trash” that should dismissed with utter bile while she was performing? How about while she was camming? How about while she was…errrrr IS covering the industry?
Before I get too sarcastic for my own good, I want to express that I have nothing against Monica. I’ve never said an unkind word about her. I haven’t dissected her racist rants, haven’t openly mocked her attacks on people based on zero facts and never questioned why she is blasting an industry while still using it to further whatever agenda she’s got from day to day. There have been times when I have been very interested in hearing what Monica has to say because I think her perspective is unique. Apparently though she is allowed to be in the business, make money from it, comment on it and use it as she sees fit, but anyone else is “porn trash.” I wouldn’t have sat by lightly has someone called Monica trash when she was doing her thing on camera or web cam or anywhere else. I don’t always defend this industry, but I do defend the people in it against sweeping attacks. I think it takes more than a choice of profession to make someone “trash.” I think it has more to do with their actions, what they do for those around them, how they love their families and fight for what is right. I suppose some people might be willing to ignore all that attack someone because of the industry they choose to work in.
Then again, I also believe that “trash” comes from all races and wouldn’t limit myself to anyone by something as superficial as skin color.
Then again, maybe she just doesn’t like me personally.
I don’t have anything against Monica even after her less than kind reply. I just don’t have time or a desire to respond with hate to something so hateful. On that note, comments are open, but there will be ZERO tolerance for anything I see as hateful in reply to this. Use your words carefully.
Who is Monica Foster and why is she so angry? I’ve never even heard of her.
