It is that time of year again my friend. Time for porn companies to roll out their award-bait projects. This movie definitely qualifies in that category. It is a brilliantly shot, moody adult feature that doesn’t look or feel like an X-rated flick at all. It is the story of Elle, a call girl played brilliantly by Jessie Andrews. It has back-story, love, betrayal, violence, twists and sex. It is emotionally charged and disturbing more often than you would normally expect. There are some great sex scenes, but there are also times when the sex is secondary and this plays more like a well done B movie that just happens to have hard core fucking. We can’t call it soft when there is a serious blow bang and a wicked DP for the lovely star. Those sex scenes are very hot, though a little rough and depressing for my taste. It fits with the story tough so I’m kind of glad the sex stuck with the rest of the project. There is no doubt in my mind that Portrait of a Call Girl will be nominated for an armful of awards. Jessie Andrews is fantastic in her sex scenes and unforgettable in her dialog scenes. She’s going to be tough to beat as Best Actress. The cinematography, editing, lighting and music are flawless. The script is excellent and very well acted. It’s dark and not a traditional adult feature, but once it finds its rhythm it is worth watching even without the sex. I don’t say that often and generally when I praise the plot or acting over the sex it’s not a good thing. This time it fits though. If you want to see something dark, haunting, well acted, dirty, sexy and ultimately brilliant, definitely grab this movie. (And if you need something a little simpler to jerk off to, grab Hard Bodies and have it after you’ve watched Call Girl.)
