When I first took this toy out to review it, I had to laugh. Not that the toy itself, but at the idea that I was about to write a review on….well, on a piece of rope. It’s not like there are any moving parts or fancy features to address. I don’t get to talk about battery pack design or adjustable speeds. It’s rope. It does what rope is supposed to do. There, that’s your review. OK not really, but these are the things that go through my mind when I look at something like this.

Rope bondage is not something I claim to an expert in or even all that crazy about. Nothing wrong with some good bondage play with the right partner of course. It’s just a whole lot of work tying those knots. I was never a sailor and dropped out of the Boy Scouts to pursue girls. From what I have seen of rope bondage and in talking to readers over the years, I understand the intricacies of the play and how involved the knot tying can be in the fetish. Maybe I’m just too impatient. I’ll just slap some furry cuffs on my lady friend and go to town.

All kidding aside, the Japanese Silk Rope from Pipedream is a versatile and quality product. At thirty five feet in length it works for basic bondage and also the more thorough wrapping (Shibari style) that is shown on the box. You can run this thing around your partner’s legs or arms several times and still have enough to tie it off to the bedpost. It’s fairly thin at a quarter of an inch, about a thick as some heavy bootlaces I would say and very soft. Even a novice like me knows that this is a key for any bondage toy. It doesn’t rub you the wrong way and shouldn’t cause a lot of chaffing. It feels a little bit like super soft yarn or a knitted version of the drawstrings you find in hoodies.

The Japanese Silk Rope from Pipedream comes in black, purple or red and is a really nice, inexpensive way to get started with bondage play. It is especially good for starter Shibari bondage say on the wrists of your favorite partner. (I’m just speculating of course.) It is versatile enough to be useful even beyond beginner play though and will probably become a staple in your bondage arsenal.
