From Paradise Visuals: When is a classic really a classic?
Jason from Paradise Visuals Blogs….
Note: I find Jason’s opinions very interesting. Not sure we will all agree on every one of his points, but I thought it might be interesting for you guys to read. If you have any thoughts, send them in (Rog@rogreviews.com) and we can discuss the definition of “classic.”
This years AVN Awards got me thinking…
No not about who was most deserving of best triple anal in a film containing interracial bukkake.
It was the best classic DVD category that caught my eye, maybe because my company Paradise Visuals owns over 65 “classic” movies.
This years winner was a little heart warming flick called “Debbie Does Dallas: it is one of my favorite adult films of all time. It has also been released on DVD several times by multiple companies . In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if Debbie Does Dallas has all really won an AVN Award in this category, as it’s been available on DVD for more then 8 years.
Which brings me to the question how many times can you re-release the same movie and win the “best classic DVD” award?
After looking at the other nominees I couldn’t help, but notice the majority of the movies had also been all ready available on DVD numerous times. For example, the Marilyn Chambers classic “Insatiable “won this award in 2004, but low and behold, here it was nominated again.
Then one title really caught my eye, Flashpoint… I remember this movie because it starred Jenna Jameson, a minutes research revealed this “classic” was released in 1998. In my humble opinion saying that a movie with Jenna is a classic, is like saying Hanson is a classic rock band.
What is the cut off date for a movie to be considered a classic? According to every review section of AVN magazine Golden age is defined as “DVD re-issues of adult titles from the early 1970’s to mid 1980’s”
Maybe I’m a bit biased, but I feel a good cut off date would be 1988, the year the legendary John Holmes passed away. In fact that would make the last eligible movie The Devil in Mr. Holmes, as it was Holmes final film and happened to be released in 1988
And while we are talking about The Devil in Mr. Holmes, I should point out the DVD includes a 90 minute interview with Holmes’ widow Laurie and a “dirty thirty” featurette called “John Holmes meets Ginger Lynn”
As most people know it is also one of the most controversial adult movies of all time.
I recommend every one check out The Devil in Mr. Holmes from Paradise Visuals exclusively distributed by Anabolic.
Who knows next year we may be up against Deep Throat (again) or even better a classic movie from Jesse Jane…
