Kaitlyn Ashley, Happy Birthday My Friend
Happy Birthday Kaitlyn Ashley: Over the weekend, somewhere far away (Tennessee last I heard) Kaitlyn Ashley turned 37 years old. Those of you who have been reading my site from the start know that Katilyn held the number one spot on my porno chart for a very, very long time. (She may still be my all time top performer for that matter.) There was always something about her performances and her looks that just worked for me. Though I have written much about Kaitlyn as a performer, I am going to take a different angle here. (There is plenty on this site about Kaitlyn the performer.) I stopped calling her Kaitlyn a long time ago because she preferred to be called by her real name. It’s not a big secret, but I’ll refer to her as Kaitlyn for the sake of this story. Kaitlyn Ashley was my favorite porn performer when I started writing about this industry and she was also my first experience with “porn friendship.” Kaitlyn and I had a professional relationship, for a time I ran her fan club for her and we had a personal friendship. I helped get her everything for her fan club organized, got her on top of her correspondence and even had the thing making money for her. It was an eye-opening experience and something I enjoyed helping her build. She and her boyfriend had Mrs. Rog and I in their home a number of times. They actually introduced us to a brand new show called “South Park.” Her boyfriend took us shooting at the range where he worked, we went to movies and even hit a celebrity autograph show. (Kaitlyn actually found two dealers selling fake Kaitlyn Ashley autographs.) She and her boyfriend came down for dinners, movies and to our place for a birthday party ten years ago. We had pizza, watched Mike Tyson take off Evander Hollyfield’s ear and even had a birthday cake for Kaitlyn. Since Kailyn was a huge X-Files fan, her gift was an autographed 8×10 of Mulder and Scully that I had a friend get in person. We talked about, work, the fact that she was unsure about what to next with her career, but mostly we talked about anything other than porn. She was going through a rough break up and trying to focus on normal things.
Shortly after that birthday party, Kaitlyn disappeared. Her career in the adult film industry was over and she just took off. I tried calling, but her number had been changed. (Not unusual, she changed it three times during her last three months in the industry.) I heard from Paul Normal that she stopped by, picked up a check and said she was leaving and that she was cutting all ties with the business. Her boyfriend wasn’t happy with porn and that all made perfect sense to me. A good bye would have been nice and she left me holding the bag with her fan club stuff, (I still get letters ten years later.) but I understand why she did what she did. Getting away and making a clean break was the only way for her to happily move into the next phase of her life. Over the years I have often wondered if she was happy and for a while I hoped that she might drop me a post card just to let me know that was doing well. No such communication has come my way I don’t imagine it ever will. Porn fans miss Kaitlyn Ashley and so do I, but I also miss my friend.
I kept her fan club open for as long as I could, filling orders from the merchandise in stock and giving out the last of the 500 autographed slicks and cards she had for the club members. I held onto the money for a year and then donated it all to an animal shelter in the area where she used to live. Somewhere I still have a box of pictures she left for me. Over the years I have heard updates, mostly from Jay Ashley. Kaitlyn went to Tennessee to live with her boyfriend’s family. She became a park ranger, split with the guy she was seeing and ended up married to someone else. To my knowledge she has had no contact with anyone in the industry since. She did not show up in Vegas for her AVN Hall of Fame induction and I have not heard from her in ten years. I still think about her from time to time and just hope that she found what she was searching for. For the record, she and I never did a scene together. No super secret POV for us. However, at her birthday party she did ask me if I would do a BJ scene with her (For Dr. Fellatio I believe). I turned it down and I believe Jay Ashley got the blowjob instead. Lucky fucker. Kaitlyn was a good friend for a short time and gave me a lot of great advice. She also taught me a lot about porn friendships that has undoubtedly saved me a lot of pain over the years.
