Experts say VR content will disrupt adult entertainment

CHATSWORTH, Calif. (June 1, 2016) —It’s become a virtual certainty: Whenever an article about the latest advances in virtual reality entertainment is posted online, some poster will quip, “But what about VR porn?”

Though sometimes posed in jest, there’s no doubt for many this is a vital question—and one that AVN Media Network answers in its June issue, available online now.

Adult industry insiders say it’s no longer a matter of “if” VR is going to be a disruptive force, it’s more like “when.” AVN asked more than two dozen players at the forefront of the VR movement to share their views on how close the technology is to being widely adopted.

The perspectives included in AVN’s coverage run the gamut, including comments from many who showed their wares at this year’s AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas. Among them is HoloFilm Productions President Anna Lee, who sees the future of VR in adult as differing from the earliest examples of VR in computer-generated animation in the gaming world. She predicts a proliferation of scenes featuring actual females rather than animated characters.

”I actually see a combination of the two happening,” Lee said, “where we have photo-realistic 3D renderings of the girls that you can manipulate and make your own interactions with. … This year is about live women and men, and I hope to see the both of them merge in the future.”

Just as important as how to produce VR is the question of when to get into the marketplace. BaDoink VR entered early, and when asked about their moves CEO Todd Glider opined that being too early may be a better position than finding out one has waited too long. “The adult VR market is very, very green, largely because the entire VR space is even greener,” Glider said. “Honestly, if you’re someone with a 99-cent pair of Google Cardboard, you are an early adopter.”

Another vibrant aspect of adult VR is the use of the technology in the live cam sector. AVN reports on the advances being made by various companies to offer the VR experience to fans of cam models.

“Live VR cams are the most engaging and powerful experience yet made for virtual reality,” said Ela Darling of VRTube.

HoloFilm Productions already has what it calls “syntholograms”: computer-animated women, often based on real-life porn stars, who are programmed to perform whatever virtual sexual act the user wants, and sex toy manufacturer Kiiroo has already partnered with BaDoink to sell masturbators—male and female—that will respond to cues embedded within VR content. So, clearly, a brave new world is dawning. Find more about it from AVN Media Network.
