Lunch With Sherm & Company

I had a chance to do something really cool this weekend. I had lunch with a long time reader of my site and his family. I say “reader” but over time Sherm has felt more like a friend. He and his wife were out in SoCal visiting their sun so we set up a lunch meeting for Sunday. I headed down to Black Angus and after allowing myself to get lost (Thanks Google maps) finally pulled into the parking lot late and very hungry.
It is always interesting for me to meet someone who isn’t part of the industry but who knows me primarily from the site. These meetings usually happen in Vegas or at shows, but I have met a handful of people in “normal” settings as well. Some of you have read Sherm’s contributions to the site over the years. He sends great jokes and has had some great things to say on the issues when the mood strikes him. You may also remember that he took some shots of his lovely wife in the Rog Rules shirts a while back. I’ve also heard so much about his son that I felt I knew the young man. (He’s a Marine and is the sort of young man I hope and pray my own sons will grow into.) Finally meeting this family was really a treat for me. Sherm is as friendly as I imagined and I have to say, with all due respect after meeting Mrs. Sherm….wow. Yeah, just wow.
We sat down for a great lunch and talked for several hours. We talked about the site and porn of course, but also about the other things that are important in life. I have always tried to make this site about more than just porn. It’s something that people either love or hate. Many of you have told me over the years that bringing music, sports, movies and even politics into the mix. A few of you have disagreed and simply want the porn. I respect that of course and try to at least separate things for both groups. As I talked with Sherm and his family I realized once again how fortunate I am. There is so much ugliness that surrounds this business these days. It is easy to get bogged down by the negativity and crap that is always right on the surface. The lunch reminded me that the readers of this site and porn fans in general are regular people with full lives. We can have conversations that don’t involve anal gapes, STDs and whether or not Jenna Jameson was ruined by the mainstream world. (All topics in our conversation just the same.) The lunch kind of recharged my batteries a bit and reminded me that some people do like when I take things beyond “just” porn and that some people will read a site that isn’t all about the ugly gossip that is always at our fingertips.
After some discussion I think I even talked Sherm and his wife into doing some couples or even female-perspective reviews for the site. I look forward to that and I’m sure that many of you will appreciate the new perspective as well.
I left the lunch happy about a great conversation and proud to call Sherm and his family my friends. Thank you for that.
