For those of you who don’t know, Tina Tyler is an amazing example of just how far talent, brains and a great attitude can take someone. She’s an award-winning performer (And one of the early Gang Bang Girls) who was famous for a number of things including on screen BJ’s that were…well, let’s just say she could give lessons. She is also an award-winning director who has thrilled us with a number of original lines over the years including Fresh Out the Box from Mercenary Pictures. Off screen Tina is one of the brightest and most honest women in the industry. She’s outspoken, unafraid and I always enjoy hearing what she has to say. (Even when I don’t agree with it.) I am proud to have her back as a guest blogger this year. I thank her for her contributions and her friendship.

HD and Me.
Before I begin my rant, let me just say that I think HD is great… for broadcasting sports, epic movies, basically anything shot from far away. I do not, however, think that HD is doing porn any favours. I am an old school porn star who longs for the good old days and the forgiving grain of film. I would happily take regular VHS over HD from the perspective of on camera talent. HD gives such a clear picture that every blemish, freckle, razor bump, stretch mark and bruise is magnified to monumental proportions. From a consumer perspective, it’s getting harder to wank to when you see every little flaw of your favourite stars. And it’s not just porn that is suffering from the clarity that HD gives us. Have you tried to watch the news in HD? In Los Angeles there is a morning “news” show called Good Day LA. The three talking heads on this show are Steve Edwards, a 61 year old anchor, Dorothy Lucey, his 50 year old sidekick and Jillian Reynolds a 42 year old bimbo/ weather “girl”. Before it was broadcast in HD, these people all looked really quite good for their age, now, in HD Steve looks 80, Dorothy has to wear higher neck lines due to a plethora of sun spots on her chest and Jillian has aged 15 years overnight. Close ups in HD are only good for plastic surgeons.
With the popularity of MILF/Cougar porn, HD becomes even more of a liability. We want these older women to look hot, but then we shoot them naked in HD?? It reminds me of one of my biggest complaints as talent, back in the day. The craft service tables were covered in junk food, and sweets, lunch was pizza and the directors kept telling us to lose weight.
Not every technology should be embraced by pornographers. If you are a videographer who wants to play with HD, then take your HD camera to the beach and shoot surfers, just don’t use the zoom.
