HUSTLER ARTICLE ON BRAZIL TO BECOME BOOK, POSSIBLY FILM
September 5, 2004 — Defying industry concerns about Brazil, journalist Joe Diamond writes in the November Hustler (on sale now) that Rio de Janeiro is “one huge brothel” overflowing with gorgeous “fantasy-caliber” hookers.
Diamond calls it a “Disney World for adults.”
The article is plugged prominently on the cover’s coveted top-left spot, alongside a sizzling Tera Patrick. “How fitting that Tera’s the issue’s covergirl,” says Diamond. “Rio may be the only place on earth where average guys can spend a night of bliss with girls as hot as Tera for about $60.”
Diamond calls Rio the “Cidade de Meus Sonhos” — City of My Dreams. On other trips there he’s covered shoots for Peter North’s “Latina Fever”
series and Third World Media’s “Pretty Little Latinas” line. Those reports are slated for upcoming issues of Fox Magazine.
A literary agent has contacted Diamond about turning his experiences in Rio into a book and possibly a film or TV series.
Although he finished the Hustler article before adult actor Darren James returned from Brazil with HIV, Diamond’s subsequent research on AIDS in Brazil revealed a number of surprising facts. According to the United Nations’ 2004 Report on the Global Aids Epidemic, the prevalence of HIV in Brazil is well below 1% of the population. The world director of the UN Joint Program for HIV/AIDS, Peter Piot, said that Brazil has one of the world’s best programs for the prevention and treatment of AIDS. He said “Brazil is the first developing nation to” gives AIDS victims free antiretroviral drugs, halting the disease’s advance and reducing the deaths it causes.
Moreover, according to a July 2003 PBS Newshour report: “When it comes to fighting AIDS, Brazil is one developing country that has defied the odds.
In 1995, the World Bank estimated that there would be 1.2 million Brazilians infected with HIV by the year 2000. Today, the number of those estimated to be infected with the virus is half that amount.”
Since he began writing for adult magazines last year, Diamond has quickly become one of the industry’s most prolific journalists. In addition to Hustler, his articles about the porn biz have appeared in Club, Oui, Fox, Screw and Maxim (UK edition).
