Thank you all for your emails, but I have already emailed Tod (www.Tod-Hunter.net) about the Line Item Veto error in his story. (So please stop, OK?)
I’m sure that it was a simple mistake, but in his rush to once again slam President Bush Tod wrongly named the LIV as a pet project of “right wingers” when it is clearly supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans. It is actually a ‘pet’ project of those of us who want to see pointless pork projects…please hear this Tod…ON BOTH SIDES….stopped. He also said that President Regan got it passed into law. That part was also off. It was President Clinton who signed it into law on April 9 of 1996. It was part of the 1994 Contract With America supported by the incoming Republican majority and was immediately challenged by six senators (Led by our good friend and former klan member Robert Byrd…Perhaps if I were a poli-cheer I would point out that opposing the Line Item Veto is a pet project of Klan members, but thankfully I’m not.)
Tod was correct that the SCUS overturned the LIV in 1998. (See Clinton v. City of New York for more details. By the way…it was a Regan appointee who first declared it unconstitutional.
Since this is actually an issue I care very deeply about I can tell you and have reminded Tod that Republicans generally support this power no matter who is in the White House. They wanted it under Regan, voted it in under Clinton and still would love to see it passed. Democrats on the other hand hand tend to support it when they are in power and then turn it into a wedge issue when they are not. (Not all of them of course. Sen. Byrd has been very steady in his desire to keep the power out of any President.)
See, this is why I refuse to spoon feed you political cheerleader bullshit from web sites that can’t even get their facts straight. I’ll do my own thinking thank you very much and I expect my readers to do the same. (I wonder how many of Tod’s readers already emailed him to correct him? I wonder how many of them read past the poli-cheer sites he gets his ‘news’ from?)
Oh and for the record. I was in favor of the LIV when Clinton was in office. I am in favor of it now and will be in favor of it no matter who…yes…no matter who is in charge.
