Blu Ray Blocked? Richelle Ryan & Empire Awards
Blu Ray Format: AVN.com ran a story this week about a possible attempt by Sony to block adult companies from getting into the Blu Ray game. The Blu-Ray vs. HD battle is the latest chapter in the technology wars. We saw a similar struggle between DVD and Divx a few years ago. Though we all know how that turned out, there was some serious competition for a short while. A lot of people are still trying decide which horse to bet on, but this new story may tilt the scales in favor of HD-DVD. As the porn industry gets set to release the first few titles on HD, some of the power players are upset by what they see as Sony’s attempt to keep them off the Blu-Ray bandwagon. Though Sony denies any such attempted blockage, the numbers are not in the pornographers’ favor. With only eight Blu-Ray duplicators at their disposal, the options are limited to start with. Sony owns two of those and has a policy against duplicating adult materials at their facilities. Disney is actually the bigger obstacle. Seven of eight facilities have contracts with Disney that explicitly prohibit adult duplication at those facilities. With seven of the eight options blocked by the Mouse, it won’t be easy for adult companies to put their movies on Blu-Ray. That could certainly turn some potential buyers off from the Sony format and send them right over to the HD camp. Given the choice between two new formats, the one that offers the widest variety of content will win out more often than not. You have to wonder if Sony is every going to get it right when it comes to their proprietary formats.
