Well, hello there, since I the new kid on the block I thought I should introduce myself in this first of I hope many pieces for Rog’s great site. My name is Chandler Wilson, and I’m not associated with this great business at all. Well, let me rephrase that last statement. No, not the part about my name, I’m pretty sure about that one. No, I should have said I am associated with the business, in the most important way: I’m a fan. I’m a representative of the people who buy, rent, watch, and enjoy these performers and the flicks they make. I’m your normal, average 20-something year old porn fan. There, I said it. I’m outed. In front of the masses. Hi, I’m Chandler, and I’m a porn fan. Maybe that would be a good title for this sometimes-running commentary, “Hi, I’m a porn fan!” Yep, sounds good, let’s go with that.
One more thing about myself before I get on to some thoughts and observations about the biz. I have the distinct privilege of living overseas, in Germany. What that means is that I get to see both the American and European style of filmmaking, which as most know is quite different. Don’t worry, I will definitely touch on those different forms in a future column. Also what it means is that I don’t get the regular Hollywood movies when they first come out, and watching an NBA or NHL playoff game requires staying up to the wee hours of the morning. Not good times. What does that have to do with the adult film industry? Nothing really, I just thought I would bitch for a minute. Moment’s over; let’s get on with it.
Random observations, questions, and thoughts from a porn fan…
In the process of checking out the personal websites of my favorite stars, I have found a couple of disturbing trends, but the main one that gets under my saddle is the complete lack of respect for the common fans these sites have. Some sites have not figured out that contrary to what the mainstream media says, the average porno fan doesn’t have an I.Q. equivalent to a frog’s. We are educated, have jobs that pay more than minimum wage (some of these movies aren’t cheap ya know!), and do have some intelligence. When we look at an FAQ and read the girl featured on the site answer the question “Do you have a boyfriend?” with something to the affect of “No, but if you send me your picture and address, I’ll take applications!” it causes brain cells to leak out. We do understand that these girls are famous, and don’t go around screwing the brains out of every fan they come in contact with. And yes it does get a chuckle out of me, but then I happen across a site like Asia Carrera’s and I start to smile even bigger.
Asia runs her own site, and while it is certainly not convenient for every girl or guy to run their own site all by themselves, perhaps they could take a lesson from her. Asia doesn’t put intelligence-robbing invites to send pictures, or bold statements that she thinks about sex 24/7. She is blunt, honest, and, most importantly, herself. When asked what she does in her spare time, Asia talks about reading, playing the piano, and even studying the stock market. Now that’s what I want to know about my favorite stars! Moral of the story, drop the fake, impersonal crap on your websites, and add some interesting true facts. And you don’t even have to run your own site to do that. Take a look at Jenna Haze, Aurora Snow, or Alana Evans who only have a group on Yahoo. Take no money, almost no time, and let’s you communicate with the people who matter the most: the fans.
Here is a question that I have never gotten answered, and when I did my first interview with a porn girl, I should have asked it. Oh well, maybe this time I’ll get some results. Why do girls take off every stitch of clothing to do a scene and leave big, clunky shoes on? And don’t tell me it has to do with foot fetish people, because that would mean every film ever made could be stuck under the foot-lovers category. Also, the line about taking off shoes being clumsy and awkward and not sexy to show on screen isn’t going to fly either. That’s what an editor is for. Can anyone answer this question? Please help, I need closure.
I put down a new item on my “To Do Before I Die” list: doing a feature-length commentary on a porno. I don’t think it would be very technical, or serious for that matter. If anyone wants to put me together with a star of one of the films, and just let us have fun with it, let me know. After watching several “Behind the Scenes” features, I think my first pick would be Steven St. Croix. Of course, that would only be for the humor. I would prefer Christy Canyon, Taylor St. Claire, Aurora Snow, Jenna Haze, Alana Evans, or Tera Patrick, but if you put me and Steve together, the jokes would fly faster than Barry Bonds home run balls. And yes I did shamelessly put out the list of my favorite stars.
