San Francisco, CA – Sex Work Policy: Participatory Action Research By and For Sex Workers and Sex Trafficking Survivors reviews the effects of sex worker policy in the USA.

For literally centuries any kind of press coverage or public debate about prostitution and sex trafficking policy has centered the opinions of everyone except those most directly impacted. Actual sex worker voices have been excluded by criminalization and stigma.

In contrast Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics Rhode Island (COYOTERI) new book, Sex Work Policy: Participatory Action Research By and For Sex Workers and Sex Trafficking Survivors, explores the lived experiences and recommendations of over 2000 sex workers and sex trafficking survivors. The book delves into their experiences with the law, police, service providers, medical professionals, and more.

“Finally, a book that calls out the draconian approach to criminalizing prostitution – especially the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act, (FOSTA),” said Maxine Doogan of the Erotic Service Providers Legal, Education and Research Project (ESPLERP). “This book’s innovative approach turns traditional research on its head. We’ve been waiting years for the academics to work with our community to capture the harms we’ve been talking about.”

Well wait no more. This book shows ALL the harms these bad laws are causing to our community under the guise of rescuing victims. Not to mention the actual victims themselves.

“This book is an essential resource for anyone serious about combatting sex trafficking,” said Barbara Brents, a professor of sociology who studies sex work at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. “The data comes from six sex worker-led surveys conducted across the U.S., offering essential information on demographics, crime, safety, health, stigma, and needed social services. Each chapter combines this community-driven data with compelling narratives and ends with actionable recommendations. The findings clearly demonstrate that sex worker led research is crucial to shaping effective and informed policies.”
